A new £550,000 cancer research institute has opened, funded by donations from readers of the South Wales Evening Post.
The centre, in the grounds of Swansea’s Singleton Hospital, is hoped to be one of the best in the country for cancer research.
The new purpose-built Institute forms the second part of the South West Wales Cancer Centre, following the opening of the chemotherapy day unit last year.
Money is still being raised by the paper towards the third and final part of the centre – a £520,000 breast care unit which is due to be built next year.


A Norfolk animal rescue centre, which faced closure because of a growing cash crisis, has been saved, thanks to Eastern Daily Press readers.
Workers at the Second Chance Animal Trust blamed foot and mouth for a drop in donations during the last six months, and said the centre would have to close without a cash injection.
But following an appeal in the EDP, the centre has been saved and will continue to take in unwanted animals for the foreseeable future.


A couple have thanked the Ipswich Evening Star as they begin a life of married bliss together.
Delighted pair, Sue and Stephen Mitchell, met through the paper’s personal ad pages.
Stephen said: “I think the Star is really great. I would recommend placing an ad to anyone. Dating agencies are a waste of money. When I got married before I said it would have to be somebody really special before I did it again.
“Sue passes everything with a green light and she only cost 27p!”


The Denise Welch Scanner Appeal has hit its £50,000 target, thanks to an appeal in the Newcastle Journal.
A reader has pledged the final £2,000 needed, and Newcastle’s Freeman’s Hospital will now be able to buy a scanner for the children’s heart unit.
Neil Harrison, chairman of the heart unit, said: “We would like to thank the Journal and everyone who donated money.”


An appeal in the Derby Evening Telegraph has helped trace a suspected burglar.
A man has contacted Derby Police’s burglary unit to arrange a meeting with officers after the paper published his picture.A similar appeal through the pages of the paper in July helped trace two alleged housebreakers.
