News editor to give up work for "once in a lifetime trip"

Bucks Herald news editor Andrew Worden is set to leave the hustle and bustle of the newsroom to travel the world.

The 26-year-old journalist (pictured) has bravely handed in his notice and is planning to embark on a ten-month “once in a lifetime” adventure when he leaves the paper next month.

He said: “I’ll be going round the world with an old university friend, Alistair Grant, who is currently working for the Press Association.

“It’s one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do and this seems like the right time.

“The longer you leave it the less likely it is to happen, and I want to do it before I’m too old.”

During the trip the pair plan to visit Norway, Portugal, Russia, China, Japan, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Brazil – a far cry from Andrew’s previous lads’ holidays in Spain and family holidays in Florida.

But they still plan to do all the usual tourist things along the way – although they expect to have to find work despite having saved up as much money as they can.

Andrew said: “We have saved up a set amount of money, but have been warned by friends who have been travelling before that it is never enough and we are prepared to stop off and do whatever we have to to make the rest of the trip.”

And on his return to the UK, Andrew is hoping to return to journalism.

He said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Herald, it’s a cracking paper with a great team and I’ll miss working here.

“I suppose there is no guarantee that I’ll be able to get an equivalent job when I get back, but I’m a strong believer that if you’ve got the talent and the determination then you will always be able to find work, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I can’t wait.”
