News chief seeking vote

The managing director of the Reporter and Chronicle series of newspapers is standing as the Conservative candidate for the General Election in Derby North.

Barrie Holden, (54), runs the weekly newspaper in north Derbyshire and is a former editor-in-chief of Peterborough Evening Telegraph and former editor of the Coalville Times.

He is hoping to overturn a 10,600 Labour majority for the constituency which currently has its first Labour MP since 1983.

The area is still not clear-cut Labour territory and Barrie Holden is fighting on a platform that includes the NHS, pensioners, education and to keep the pound.

The sitting MP is Labour’s Bob Laxton and also contesting Derby North will be Liberal Democrat Bob Charlesworth.
