New survey of council secrecy

A nationwide survey of secrecy in local government has been launched by the Society of Editors.

It aims to find out which councils are planning cabinet-style executive committees and which of them will meet in secret.

The survey follows one carried out by the society in the North of Eangland.

Executive director Bob Satchwell says: “It is vital that we build up a picture of councils that are taking the opportunity of legislation that is still going through Parliament to return to their secret ways.”

To take part, visit the society’s website at www.ukeditors.com

  • Places can still be booked at the society’s spring seminar, In The Public Interest, at Warwick on May 3 (World Press Freedom Day). Contributors will include Data Protection Registrar Elizabeth France; Maurice Frankel, of the Campaign for Freedom of Information; a senior judge, police and council officers and Government ministers.

See the society’s website for more details.
