New start as paper makes its move

A new chapter has begun for The Watford Observer and its associated titles, following a move to new premises.

The newspaper had occupied its old site since 1961, but has transferred to a new purpose-built building – Observer House – at Watford Business Park.

Observer House will house the newspaper’s editorial, advertising and production teams and be home to departments for accounts, credit control, marketing, systems, digital media and distribution for the whole of Newsquest’s North London operation.

The Observer’s sister publications, the Watford Free Observer, The Harrow Times, Watford Review and Limited Edition magazine, are also based at the new premises.

Publisher Thomas Moore said: “In some ways, leaving the old offices in Rickmansworth Road is a sad occasion, however moving to Observer House will begin a new era and provide the resources and technological capability for us to enhance our delivery of information both locally and worldwide.

“It provides a commitment to the communities in and around Watford that the Watford Observer will continue to provide employment opportunities into and way beyond its 140th year.”

The Rickmansworth Road site has been sold to developers and will be used to build flats and houses.

Group editor Peter Wilson-Leary said: “The move to Observer House represents a new chapter in the illustrious history of this newspaper and its an honour to be the editor at this exciting time.

“It is a true landmark in the life of a publication that has served south west Hertfordshire for nearly 140 years.

“The building in Rickmansworth Road served us well and our departure is tinged with some sadness for it holds many memories for those members of staff who have been with the company for a long time.

“However, the surroundings were somewhat less than suitable for a newspaper and multi-media publishing company of the 21st Century and those who have made the move are delighted to be working in such a clean and modern office environment.”
