New press is good news for readers

A new printing press at the North West Evening Mail is already proving to be good news for some of the paper’s readers, with the creation of up to 50 new jobs.

Construction of a new hall to house the press is now in its fourth week, and local workers are already on site in Barrow-in-Furness.

The £5.5m project will occupy a new 10,000sq ft building near Cocken Lake on the Furness Business Park.

Work is under way on to create an access road to the site, together with a new drainage system, and during the 30-week programme more jobs will be created for local people.

In September the new press will be delivered and installed, and by next January it will take over from the paper’s existing press.

At full speed it will be able to produce 55,000 papers per hour and, among many combinations, will be able to produce a 48-page tabloid paper with 32 pages in full colour.
