New Gazette editor

Damian Holmes has been named successor to Phil Pledger as editor of the Whitby Gazette.

Damian, formerly the deputy at Whitby, is now in post and looking forward to taking the 13,000-circulation weekly forward, with the help of his seven editorial staff.

The 33-year-old was formerly a reporter and news editor at the Scarborough Evening News before broadening his skills into subbing and winning the job as deputy editor at Whitby.

He entered the world of journalism at the Garstang Courier, Morecambe Visitor and Bury Times before heading to the other side of the country.

He told HoldTheFrontPage: “Phil ran the paper very well and I’ll aim to do the job in a similar fashion.

“We’ve just gone bi-weekly from weekly and it’s proved to be a big success so we’d like to build on that.”

Mr Pledger left the 150-year-old Whitby title, which is owned by Johnston Press, after two years, for personal reasons, and was moving to Cumbria.
