New FOI website aims to promote openness

A new-look freedom of information website with a ‘response calculator’ to show when a reply from a public authority is due has been launched by the Scottish Information Commissioner.

The aim of the site is to make it easier for people to understand and exercise their rights under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act.

It will also help public authorities comply with their legal obligations and embrace the spirit of openness which the Act sets out to achieve.

The new look includes clearer signposting, a three step guide to making a request, and an improved search facility for past decisions.

Scottish Information Commissioner Kevin Dunion said: “The challenge set by the new freedom of information regime is to move from a culture of secrecy to a culture of openness.

“My role is not just about enforcing the law but ensuring members of the public feel confident about their rights and encouraging public authorities to go beyond compliance to become more open in all their dealings.

“Our new website will actively support this process, by helping all users of the Act, in whatever capacity, make the most of what it has to offer.”

  • Since the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act came into force in January 2005, the Commissioner’s office has received more than 500 applications and 1,500 enquiries each year.
