New editors in Suffolk

Staff changes at the Bury Free Press have followed the departure of the last editor, Debbie Tweedie, to become deputy editor at the Cambridge Evening News.

Her successor is Barry Peters, who began his career with Sharman Newspapers in 1983 as a reporter working on weekly papers in Ely, Peterborough, March, Wisbech and Huntingdon.

He then moved to the Cambridge Evening News as a senior sub-editor before working as a page editor for the sports departments of The Mirror and The People.

Last year, Barry took up the position of editor of the Newmarket Journal, a three-edition weekly in the same stable as the Bury Free Press.

During his time at the Journal he was responsible for a campaign which raised £40,000 for a new ultrasound scanner in just five months.

New deputy editor at Bury Free Press is Heather Turner. She replaces Wendy Hughes who now edits the Newmarket Journal.

Mrs Turner has worked on the Free Press for the last six years, starting on the newsdesk before moving to to the subs’ desk.
