The new editor at the Northants Evening Telegraph has promised his paper will play a real part in the community.

Lee Bearton is joining the Telegraph from Bedfordshire Newspapers, where he was group editor, running the successful Luton and Dunstable title.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining the team at the Evening Telegraph – it is a paper with a tremendous history.

“The people of this area have come to expect a high quality service from their local paper and that is exactly what we aim to continue offering.

“I hope you will quickly notice improvements too. I am sure we can deliver everything you need to keep you informed and involved in your area.”

During his four years as editor of the Herald & Post it had its success recognised as it won the Newspaper Society’s Community Newspaper of the Year in 1998 and 1999.

It was given commendations in the Newspaper of the Year category for the South East and London region three years running, and was praised in the House of Commons after it brought about a change in the way child sex assault victims were treated in court.

Lee was also responsible for four other titles, an internet site and overseeing sales increases in the groups three paid-for titles.

He has also worked at the Mail on Sunday, Daily Mirror, Peterborough Evening Telegraph and the Rugby Advertiser.
