NCTJ gives backing to college degree course

A Lancashire college has won an industry seal of approval for its new BA Journalism degree course.

The course, at Edge Hill College of Higher Education in Ormskirk, near Liverpool, is due to start in September 2001 and has received provisional accreditation from the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Course leader Tony Turjansky said: “The award of provisional accreditation by the NCTJ marks the culmination of 18 months’ development, and means that Edge Hill has now joined the small number of higher education institutions across the country which offer accredited undergraduate degree courses in journalism.”

He added: “For the students it provides a guarantee of quality, because the NCTJ will be monitoring our course closely to ensure we meet their standards.

“It also means that our students will not only be working for academic Honours Degree but also for the NCTJ Pre-entry Certificate, which is the first professional qualification for journalists.”

The accreditation was given after a tour of the facilities by a panel from the NCTJ including the chief executive of NCTJ training Rob Selwood, NCTJ board member Bob Norris, Ormskirk Advertiser editor Rob Hopkins and the editor of the Southport Visiter John Dempsey.

The new course has already attracted a number of applicants from across the country and aims to interest mature students, those who have studied for post-16 vocational courses as well as A-level entrants.
