'Mr Newspaper' is dead

A Lincolnshire journalist, affectionately known as ‘Mr Newspaper’, has died.

Bill Skelton, (80), entered journalism in 1965 as the Woodhall Spa correspondent for the Lincolnshire Standard.

Six months later he became editor of the Horncastle and Woodhall Spa edition when the company opened a Standard office there.

In 1971, he became a reporter at the Market Rasen Mail before returning to the Standard as a news editor in 1974.

He retired in 1985 but from 1988 onwards worked as a freelance reporter for various titles including the Horncastle News and Market Rasen Mail.

Earlier this year, he began writing a series of articles featuring anecdotes from his life in journalism but ill health forced him to give this up.

The Horncastle News said: “Bill touched the lives of thousands of people through his journalistic career, earning widespread respect and affection along the way.”
