Matthew's dream job at the Valley

How many fans have dreamed of working at the heart of their favourite football club, rubbing shoulders with the stars and telling the world how good their team is?

That’s the job Matthew Wright’s just secured – for Premiership new boys Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

He has been appointed assistant communications manager in a role that will include updating the club’s website, doing programme notes and liaising with the local and national press.

The 24-year-old is currently a senior reporter at the Chad in Mansfield and has been there, and at the Hucknall Dispatch since completing his training at Highbury College in Portsmouth.

He’s now straining at the leash to get down to London – but it will be a wrench after 21 years in the East Midlands.

He said: “For me it’s the dream job. They are the team I supported since I was a boy because I’m originally from that area.

“I failed to get a job that was advertised in January but they said they could be having a reorganisation in the office and there might be a job so I should stay in touch.

“When their changes were made I wrote a cheeky letter reminding them I was still here and they interviewed me again – and I got the job.”

As for Charlton’s chances among the big guns this season?

“They are going to battle valiantly to retain their Premiership status – I think they’ll do it,” he said.
