Mail staff work until 2.30am to bring sought-after FA Cup reports

Staff at the Burton Mail worked long into Sunday night to produce a special breakfast edition covering Burton Albion’s historic draw with Manchester United in the FA Cup.

With an extra 4,000 copies added to the print run, the Mail hit the streets on Monday morning with a 24-page pull-out after staff had worked until 2.30am.

But the demand for stories, pictures and opinion was so high that newsagents were calling the Mail asking for more copies.

Deputy editor (content) Andy Parker told HoldtheFrontPage: “We pulled out all the stops – it was an unprecedented team effort.

“We had ten people covering the game just from the news side of the operation and three people there from the sports desk.

“Immediately after the match they were back at the office to put together a 24-page pull-out which appeared in a special breakfast edition on Monday morning.

“Early indications are that we had very good sales. We had an extended print run and we supplied most newsagents with additional copies.”

The Mail also printed a 12-page picture special from the game on Tuesday and the coverage on its website also proved a big hit, with comments being posted from Thailand, Canada and Australia.

Andy said: “We have sold a number of subscriptions to our online edition as a direct result of the game, which has been very welcome.

“Obviously the minute the draw was made we knew it would be huge for the town and for the newspaper.

“Things don’t come much bigger than this for Burton Albion or for the Burton Mail.”

Sunday’s 0-0 draw meant Conference side Albion secured a third round replay at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

The Mail’s coverage of the replay is still in the discussion stage, especially as the paper doesn’t expect to receive quite the number of press passes for Old Trafford as it did for the Pirelli Stadium.
