Mail in pioneering move with television news

A local television presenter is teaming up with the Oxford Mail in what is believed to be the first tie-up of its kind in the UK.

Wesley Smith, from TV’s Central News, is teaming up with the Newsquest title to bring readers and viewers a series of features, combining print and television.

His new weekly feature Where’s Wesley? made its debut in the Oxford Mail and on Central News in the third week of March, with Wesley taking advantage of each medium’s qualities.

In the Oxford Mail he wrote a column about the evening he spent calling the numbers, playing bingo and meeting the punters at the Gala Bingo Hall in Banbury.

The same night, viewers watched Wesley (pictured below) in action at the bingo hall in a dedicated strand of Central News.

Oxford Mail editor Jim McClure said: “We’re always envying what Central News can do that we can’t, and vice versa.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Wesley to enjoy the best of both worlds, doubling our public’s delight.”

In coming weeks, Wesley will go to a school for butlers, attend a tea dance, learn how to make Banbury cakes, and be taught to drive a bus.

His experiences will be reported in the Oxford Mail and on Central News every Wednesday.
