Long trek to preserve priceless archives

The editor of a Bedfordshire weekly is embarking on a 700-mile round trip to help save early editions of the paper.

James Stewart is travelling to Falkirk in Scotland to have old copies of the Biggleswade Chronicle bound by restorers Riley, Dunn and Wilson.

The set of papers date from the first edition in 1891 to 1939 when the paper changed from broadsheet to tabloid.

Each book takes 20 hours to compile, but the restorers are amongst the best – they hold contracts with the British Museum and the British Library.
