London titles hit the web

The weekly newspapers bought by Archant from Independent News and Media last year have now been put online, as part of the group’s single largest Internet project.

The move means all 27 titles, including the Barking and Dagenham Post, the Islington Gazette and the East London Advertiser, now all have their own website.

A number of other related sites such as london-exhibitions.co.uk has also been created, resulting in 32 new websites plus a new London portal being launched by the publisher in just 12 weeks.

News staff have been given training on how to upload news, sport and other content from their newspapers to their new websites and, as well as catching up with the what’s happening in their local area online, readers can book adverts in the papers through the websites.

The companion site, www.London24.net, with its borough-based web content, also provides an opportunity to attract readers who may not otherwise have come to Archant’s sites – and to move them towards their local newspapers.

Digital media director Clive Haden said: “The concurrent launch of all London’s newspaper titles and London24 is the single largest online project ever taken on by Archant and underlines the company’s ongoing commitment to this rapidly growing part of our business.

“More people are online than ever before and increasingly they expect to be able to conduct business with their local newspapers both in-print and online.

“By providing these sites we are meeting an important demand to both our readership and advertisers.”

Archant London MD Enzo Testa added: “The digital media team have done a tremendous job creating the new Archant London sites in record time.

“We expect our traffic levels to increase significantly. Indeed, these sites have already generated 70,000 unique visitors in December alone and that’s before any in-paper promotion. This in turn will give us the opportunity to gain new revenue streams.”
