Local newspapers for local people

Regional newspapers are now read by 84.5 per cent of the UK population – 39.9m adults – a year-on-year increase of 1.8 per cent.

According to the latest figures published by the Target Group Index, 81 per cent of the UK population say they are interested in local news.

That makes it the most popular newspaper topic from a list of 27 which included UK/British news, European news and sport.

Newspaper Society communications director Lynne Anderson said: “Despite the forces of globalisation we still live our lives locally and want to know what is happening on our doorstep.

“Local and regional newspapers continue to thrive because they perform a unique role in our communities, providing us with relevant and trusted editorial.”
