Top speakers announced for journalism law conference

A line-up of top speakers has been announced for the annual Law for Journalists conference which is to be held in London on November 26.

Speakers will include Andrew Caldecott QC; John Battle, head of compliance at ITN; Marcus Partington, head of editorial legal department, Trinity Mirror; and Jan Tomalin, controller of legal and compliance at Channel Four.

Topics will include libel, court reporting restrictions, privacy claims and the media – including recent cases involving the national and regional press, and investigative journalism and the law.

The conference will also feature a Freedom of Information session chaired by the Campaign for Freedom of Information director Maurice Frankel, which will also include Kent Messenger political editor Paul Francis.

The event, which is run by the Newspaper Society and Press Gazette, will be of relevance to national and regional press, online and broadcast media, journalists and other editorial staff and students, trainers and media lawyers.

The Newspaper Society’s director of political, editorial and regulatory affairs Santha Rasaiah said of the conference speakers: “These are the experts to whom the media turns when it faces legal problems.

“The conference will provide the practical advice that journalists need on negotiating the law to help the investigation, publication and defence of their stories.”

Reservations for the event can be made by contacting Andrea Hayes on 0208 565 3056 or at [email protected].
