Reporter persuades judge to lift name ban

Two 14-year-olds who committed a series of horrific burglaries putting theirvictims in fear of their lives have been named in the Bolton Evening News.

Reporter Paul Britton prepared a letter to hand to the Crown Court judge toback up his case to get the boys named.

In one of the incidents, they held a knife to the throat of a 38-year-oldwoman after breaking into her home, and in another, they went armed with acricket bat and a hammer.

The boys’ barristers were reluctant to have the order lifted, and Paul stoodup in court and again stated his case why they should be named.

Judge Derwin Hope lifted the order and agreed that the public should knowwho the boys were and added that had they been adults they would have facedgreater sentences.

Each of the boys was sentenced to three years in a Young OffendersInstitution.
