Media ban on defendant's ID overturned

A reporter who stood up in court to challenge a media ban on naming the defendant has won the right to publish.

Carl Walker questioned Jersey magistrates about their decision to place a blanket ban on identifying a woman who had previously been described in court as “playing Fagin” to a group of teenage youngsters.

He said there was no reason why the Jersey Evening Post should be prevented from identifying the woman, who was in court for offences against children.

After reading the relevant law – Article 100 (a) of the Children Jersey Law, magistrate Ian Le Marquand agreed there was no real case for the name of the defendant to be withheld.
