Evening Post banned from naming youth

A judge in Swansea has banned the South Wales Evening Post from naming a youth who injured a policeman.

The ban was imposed by judge Christopher Morton even though the 17-year-old had been legitimately identified in a previous press report of the case.

The Post published the youth’s name and address after he pleaded guilty to an offence of causing actual bodily harm at Swansea Crown Court.

But when the teenager was due to be sentenced, the judge agreed to an application made by defence barrister Bill Peters for an order to be made under the Children and Young Persons Act.

No such order was in force when the youth appeared before a different judge earlier this year and admitted injuring police officer Christian Jon Morgan.
