The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission’s staff, editors and complainants.

These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.

Below are summaries of the latest complaints involving the regional press which fall into the first category.

Stratford Herald
S Clifton-Dover, of Stratford, complained that an article inaccurately associated him and his wife with pagan practices, leading to the cancellation of their wedding venue. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The editor agreed to publish a letter from the couple expressing their dissatisfaction and to append to this an editorial note of apology for any distress that the reporting caused.

Carmarthen Journal
Peter Conroy of Llandysul complained that an article was inaccurate when it stated that Llandysul Council was to take out an injunction against him in order to stop him complaining. The complainant was also unhappy that he had been labelled a “serial moaner”. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a series of letters on the subject.

Evening Express
O Duijverman complained that an article about her brother’s eviction from his home after breaching his ASBO contained inaccuracies. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The newspaper provided the complainant with a private apology and amended its records accordingly.

Daily Record
O Duijverman complained that an article about her brother’s eviction from his home after breaching his ASBO contained an inaccuracy relating to the number of times the order had been breached. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The newspaper provided the complainant with a private apology and amended its records accordingly.
