Kent chief nominated for top role

Edwin Boorman, chairman and chief executive of Kent Messenger Group, has been put forward by the Newspaper Society’s Council as the society’s next vice-president.

Subject to formal approval at the AGM in May, Edwin will succeed Alec Davidson as president in July 2001. Alec Davidson takes over from the Society’s current president, James Evans, this July.

The Kent Messenger Group is one of the largest independent, family-owned newspaper groups in the UK. It was given to Edwin Boorman’s grandfather, Barham Boorman, in 1882 by the previous owners. They were grateful to Barham who had raised sufficient money from local residents to pay off their debts which had landed the previous owners in Maidstone gaol.

Edwin Boorman has been chairman and chief executive of the group since 1986. He was previously managing director from 1965 to 1986.

He joined the group in 1959, was editor of the South Eastern Gazette from 1960 to 1962, and editor of the Kent Messenger from 1962 to 1965.

Edwin is a long-standing member of the Newspaper Society’s Council and has served on various committees, including editorial and training. He is a former director of the Regional Newspaper Advertising Bureau. His father, Henry Pratt Boorman, was president of the Society in 1960-61.
