Jungle adventure beckons for journalist Giles

Following the success of TV’s I’m a Celebrity, Wiltshire Times reporter David Giles is preparing for his own ‘jungle’ adventure – in Devon.

The journalist has volunteered to take part in a fundraising survival challenge called I’m not a Celebrity and I Have to Stay There, in aid of leukaemia charity the Anthony Nolan Trust and the Times 150 Fund.

He will join other volunteers from the county who will all spend five days in the wilderness at a secret location in Devon, and, as in the popular ITV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, they will have to get used to a more basic way of life.

Among the tasks they will have to complete will be to build their own shelters, prepare their own food – including worm omelettes – and learn survival techniques.

David said: “I’m told many people come back from their jungle adventure completely changed. They pack in their jobs and try something they have always wanted to do but never had the guts for.

“I’m happy at the Wiltshire Times and I love what I do, but I could learn to appreciate that life is not about material possessions. Plus the Anthony Nolan Trust is a really good cause.

“It will be tough and I’m told I may to have to eat worms, but who knows? I might even enjoy it.”

Ahead of the trip, David, who is used to his home comforts, is hoping to persuade a few of the paper’s readers to join him on the trip, which takes place next June, and will also be looking to raise hundreds of pounds in sponsorship.

He said: “I am looking forward to it. It will be a challenge but it will also be an experience you will never forget and I hope there are plenty of people out there who would like to come along and join me.”
