Journalists encounter unexpected story en route to m-way smash

Bucks Free Press reporter Hannah Williams and chief photographer Anita Ross-Marshall encountered an unexpected story on their way to cover a major crash on the M40.

As they headed for the Jn3 Loudwater slip road to get to the scene, they were met by drivers coming up it the wrong way to escape the congestion.

Quick-thinking Anita started firing off pictures of cars swerving out of the way of the oncoming traffic driving illegally up the road.

Apart from making a picture spread in the Free Press under the headline ‘Madness on M40 slip road’, editor Steve Cohen decided the matter needed to be taken further.

He said: “As well as reporting the story, we also had a moral responsibility and contacted the police asking them if they wanted copies of the pictures.

Hannah handed over a CD disc with the incriminating photos to Thames Valley Police.

Spokesman Marianne Shaw said: “Anyone who is identifiable in the photos will be receiving an official warning letter from Thames Valley Police. We will be writing to transport managers rather than individuals in the case of company vehicles.”
