Is it Hale v Redgrave for prestigious award?

A national Sunday newspaper has highlighted Matlock Mercury editor Don Hale as a contender for its ‘Man of the Year’.

The Observer is asking readers to vote for their man and woman of 2000.

And the campaigning editor is one of a number of people highlighted in the paper to help readers make up their minds.

The Observer said: “Should we recognise Don Hale, whose long campaign to free Stephen Downing looks to be on the brink of vindication? There can be few finer achievements in recent journalism.”

Other suggestions include olympic rower Steve Redgrave, columnist Nigella Lawson and film director Sam Mendes.

Voting closes on Tuesday December 19 and the winners will be announced on New Year’s Eve.

To register your support for Don, you can email your nomination to [email protected] with 20 words giving a reason for your choice.
