Innovation sees Welsh title go digital

Welsh language newspaper Y Cymro is pressing ahead with an innovation to make it completely available in digital format on the Internet.

Later this month, readers will be able to receive an exact digital replica of the printed version with advanced search, zoom and navigation. There will be automatic delivery for subscribers on a weekly basis.

Editor Rob Jones said subscribers could simply download Y Cymro and enjoy reading their newspaper the same as if it was in a printed format.

He said: “Dramatic changes are happening in the world of publishing. Publishers must recognise and struggle with the onslaught of competition from online information and e-commerce providers.

“Consumer demand is also changing as people travel more often seeking more efficient access to publisher provided products and services. Consumers now have more choices in how they access and receive information.

“Y Cymro’s new paperless distribution service gives readers, who are unable to purchase the newspaper, the closest thing to a traditional print media experience.”

Y Cymro will be working in partnership with NewsStand, an innovative e-commerce company with a patent-pending technology for delivering traditionally formatted print media over the Internet.

The NewsStand solution has attracted widespread interest from the publishing community. NewsStand is currently working with several top publishers. Other newspapers available by subscription include The Scotsman, The Australian, New York Times, Le Monde, China Daily and New Zealand Press.
