Hull stores show they care

Dozens of shops, off-licences and pubs across East Yorkshire have shown they care – by backing a campaign against under-age drinking run by the Hull Daily Mail.

Since the paper launched its Show You Care campaign earlier this month, it has been inundated with calls from off-licences and supermarkets, all wanting to join the drive to banish under-age drinking.

Almost 50 outlets which sell alcohol have agreed to display pledge posters with the words We support the Mail’s Show You Care Campaign. We will not sell alcohol to children under the age of 18.

Mail editor John Meehan said: “The campaign seeks to alert parents, retailers and licensees to the disturbing truth that many young people drink to excess regularly – often following the example of their elders.”

The campaign, run in conjunction with the Alcohol Advisory Service, Humberside Police and the East Riding and Hull Drug Action Teams, aims sent the message out to that alcohol, when abused, can kill.

Through a series of articles, the paper has highlighted some of the issues surrounding under-age drinking, including the health risks, legal issues and the link between alcohol and crime.
