Below is the article written by Kim Fletcher, editorial director of theTelegraph’s new media wing.


“Can newspapers and magazines be forced to run advertisements that are not in their own commercial interests? It is a question that is exercising our friends at Press Gazette.

For as long as anyone can remember, the industry weekly has been synonymous with ads for jobs at provincial newspapers. Now two of the biggest regional newspaper groups have not only created a jobs web site that undercuts it, but are demanding advertising space to inform the world of the fact.

First a little nostalgia. Any journalist who has ever worked in theprovinces recognises instantly the tone of the job adverts at the back of UKPress Gazette.

They inhabited – inhabit still – a world in which reporters are expected to be “self starters” with “killer news instincts” and the ability to dig out “off-diary exclusives”; where only subs who are “fast and accurate” and hot on “strong eye-catching headlines” need apply; where sports writers must ask themselves: “Are you ready to join the top team in journalism?”
