How employees can 'own' the company

Some firms do more than set out basic pay and conditions packages for their staff.

A good pension or sought-after part of the country can entice top staff and then make sure that they stay.

Two companies that can have laid claim to looking after their staff are the KM Group, which employs more than 600 people in the south-east, and Eastern Countie Newspapers Group, a Norwich-based business which owns57 regional newspapers.

People who work at ECNG have more of a stake in the company than many newspaper staff across the country.

Many are benefiting from an employee share ownership scheme.

More than 75 per cent are taking part in the “matched share” purchase plan and a high percentage of those taking part decide to keep their shares rather than sell.
