Hoddle echo aids charity

Readers of the Southern Daily Echo are being urged to help children in Ireland by sampling the singing talents of former England football boss Glenn Hoddle.

The unlikely mix of ingredients produced a Page 3 picture lead for the Southampton-based title.

Reporter Adam Postans’ exclusive told the inside story of the 1981 Tottenham Hotspur Party Album, produced by Southampton man Tom Newman.

Newman revealed that Hoddle – now Saints’ manager – was the only Spurs player to actually sing on the record. The harmonies were performed by the producer’s pub mates, he said.

The story told of Newman’s plans to transform a minesweeper into a radio station for use by Catholic and Protestant children in Ireland.

The paper invited readers to phone a special number and hear Hoddle sing Hey Jude, with the paper promising a donation to Newman’s charity for every call received.
