Herald captures military life at Afghan camp with head-mounted camera

Unique footage of life inside the military base Camp Bastion, in southern Afghanistan, has been filmed by Plymouth Herald reporter Tristan Nichols, using a head-mounted camera.

Defence reporter Tristan travelled to the country’s dangerous southern Helmand Province with photographer Lucy Duval and Western Morning News colleague Peter Harrison earlier this month, and was given a guided tour of the desert home to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines.

Warrant officer Miles Hall, from Tavistock, showed Tristan the layout of the camp for the 15-minute film, including where they eat, sleep and relax, and also showed him how the camp is protected.

It was then uploaded on to the Herald’s website on a section dedicated to the trip to the war-torn country, which also includes all the stories filed while on the trip and a diary written by Tristan.

Web editor Neil Shaw said: “You won’t ever have seen such a detailed tour of Camp Bastion from this perspective before.

“It gives a look inside their daily lives you won’t get anywhere else.”

During the trip Tristan also filmed five other videos using the head-mounted camera, including a patrol in Lashka Gar and Christmas messages home from the troops.
