"Hand yourself in," pleads paper

An evening newspaper has appealed to a driver of a van, involved in a collision which killed a 23-year-old teacher, to hand himself in to police.

The Reading Evening Post made the unusual plea after teacher Helen Clark was killed when her Renault Clio was involved in4:06 PM 2/4/2003 collision with a Vauxhall Vectra being followed by police.

Detectives are now searching for the driver of the Vectra, whose identity the Post says is an open secret across Reading, after he fled the crash scene.

Evening Post editor Andy Murrill told readers: “This is an unusual move for a newspaper to make, but after a week, the Evening Post now calls on the family and friends of the man police want to speak to persuade him to go to the nearest police station.

“The pain her fiancé and family must be feeling is too great to imagine.

“We say to the man concerned – you owe it to them to go to the police now.”
