Goodbye to glass terror

Glass attacks in Manchester are a thing of the past – thanks to a joint campaign between the police and the press.

The Manchester Evening News teamed up with Greater Manchester Police to call for pubs and clubs in the city to use toughened glasses after several high profile incidents.

The paper also lobbied MPs, including Home Secretary Jack Straw, over the issue.

And in the 12 months since the campaign was launched, there hasn’t been a single reported incident of glasses and bottles being used as weapons – despite an eight per cent increase nationally.

Now, Manchester Police has been inundated with requests from other forces for help in implementing similar schemes in their areas.

Chief Inspector Garry Shewan said: “We want to continue our work with the MEN and build on that partnership.

“Working in partnership with other agencies using strategic policies and initiatives all go towards encouraging everybody to make the city centre a safer place.”
