Gazette takes on high-tech challenge

The Westmorland Gazette and its website thisisthelakedistrict have joinedforces for an exciting new education initiative.

Kendal South Lakes Education Business Partnership has provided funding for the newspaper to commission a special film for the Internet which gives pupils and teachers an insight into how their local newspaper is made.

The film – made by a ‘crew’ of students from Cumbria College ofArt and Design at Carlisle – replaces the Newspapers in Education video produced by the Gazette in 1992.

The pioneering video was distributed to more than 60 local schools with anaward-winning primary resource pack which contained 30 NationalCurriculum-related tasks.

The newspaper-based exercises have since been updated and uploaded onthe Gazette’s website – so that teachers can access them for use in the classroom.

However, in the years since the video was made, such has been the change inthe technology used to produce the newspaper that it was also decided a newbehind-the-scenes film was required.

For the new film the Gazette sought sponsorship from Kendal South LakesEBP, of which the newspaper is a member.

The Partnership’s distinctive feature is a formal agreement committing the partners to work together to improve education and employment opportunities.

The video project fitted the bill perfectly because of the partnershipbetween the newspaper and the art and design students, resulting in an endproduct for use in the classrooms of schools throughout the area.
