From little acorns…

More proof that work experience on your home town newspaper can be the start of a great career in journalism was found in the pages of the Derbyshire Times’ latest edition.

Times reporter David Smedley did a two-page interview with Cath Urquhart, who is now travel editor on The Times.

She revealed that, after being bitten by the journalism bug, she spent a week at the Derbyshire Times on work experience.

She went on to study journalism at a London college and later worked shifts as a financial reporter for the Sunday Express, and then joined the Daily Star before arriving on the Daily Telegraph travel desk. Three years ago, Cath (34) was appointed travel editor at The Times.

She now heads a team of six staff as well as a host of freelance writers.

She said the job is hard work and not as glamorous as people would imagine.

“Seventy five per cent of the time is spent in the office because we have to produce eight to ten pages every week, which is a lot of copy to put through,” she told Dave.

But Cath has had chance to see plenty of the world, through work and holidays, but says she still jumps at any chance to return to her native Peak District in Derbyshire which, she claims, compares with the most beautiful places on earth.
