Former P&J sub-editor loses cancer battle

Former Aberdeen Press and Journal sub-editor Ron Gaiter has lost his battle against lung cancer.

He worked for the Press and Journal for 34 years, before retiring two years ago.

He was only six months into his retirement when he was diagnosed as having cancer.

Press and Journal chief sub Jim Urquhart, who worked with Ron for 27 years, said: “Ron had a wide knowledge of our circulation area and was a stickler for getting things correct.

“He would always check and double check anything he was unsure of and came up with some wonderful headlines.

“Ron was always best with off-beat stories where his humour came to the fore.

“He will be sadly missed by all his colleagues and friends on the P&J.”
