Former Express writer publishes new book

Former Aberdeen Evening Express journalist David Smith has written a new book chronicling the city through the 1950s and 1960s.

The book, Aberdeen in the Fifties and Sixties, recalls some of the most memorable events in the recent history of the North East, including the loss of the Longhope lifeboat, the Beatles playing at the Beach Ballroom, and the collapse of Aberdeen University’s zoology building.

For David, who was news editor of the Evening Express before he retired earlier this year, compiling the 200-page book was a labour of love.

He said: “It has been very much a matter of a step back in time for me, and that’s been fantastic.

“There are so many things that happened during those decades, especially during the 50s.

“As I did my research, I found I’d either forgotten many special things, or didn’t really appreciate them at the time.”
