Former Echo journalist dies

A former Exeter Express and Echo journalist who rose to become a top sports reporter in Australia has died aged 54.

Brian Phillips, who was born in South Devon, began his journalism career with Devon News Service in Exeter, before moving on to the Exeter Express and Echo, and a daily paper in Bristol.

In the 1970s, Brian emigrated to Australia, working for the Telegraph and Mirror newspapers in Sydney, and became sports editor, covering many of the Australian sporting triumphs over the last three decades.

He retired about four years ago, and developed a brain tumour 12 months ago.

He leaves a widow, Penny, two sons, Darren and Gareth, and three grandchildren.
