Football club favourite has died

A former Northern Ireland journalist has died aged 90.

John McAnulty worked for the Belfast Telegraph, and before that the Newry Reporter and Armagh Guardian.

He spent his entire life in journalism, retiring in 1988, and was frequently asked by the court authorities to be the official shorthand writer at trials.

He was also an ex-chairman of the Mid-Ulster branch of the National Union of Journalists, member of the Irish Council Executive and for a time also represented Northern Ireland on the National Executive.

Newry Town Football Club was also a major part of John’s life, with him covering their activities from 1946 until late last year, never missing a game.
