Football celebrations give weeklies the perfect opportunity to boost profile

Two Northcliffe newspapers won valuable TV publicity during a football club’s promotion celebrations.

Somerset and Dorset’s Western Gazette and Yeovil Times sponsored Yeovil Town’s tour of honour, celebrating the Glovers’ promotion to League One.

Jacqueline Dean, managing director of the Western Gazette, said: “Two open-top buses led the tour, visiting five senior schools, local businesses and the town centre, with high profile coverage on BBC, Sky and ITV networks all featuring the buses and the branded sponsorship from these newspapers.

“Our newspaper sales team handed out Western Gazette ‘Well done the Glovers’ cards (branded with Western Gazette) but with plenty of room for autograph hunters – these proved immensely popular and were evident in all the television coverage.

“We accommodated every radio station and the Western Gazette’s name was mentioned endlessly with reference to the celebration supplement being prepared for this Thursday’s newspaper.”

In the evening, the Western Gazette handed over to the Western Daily Press which sponsored the civic ceremony.

The Western Daily, presented the team and staff with special limited-edition cufflinks, cast in green, to celebrate their victory.

In addition two eight-page, special souvenir issues were produced, along with a fifth edition and dedicated web pages with pictures of fans and players for sale.
