Food risks, droppings and kitchen filth uncovered by paper's FOI quest

Information obtained by the South Wales Argus under the Freedom of Information Act has revealed the shocking state of school kitchens.

The paper obtained reports on dozens of primary and secondary school inspections showing 59 out of 139 inspected schools had seriously breached health regulations.

The documents also showed:

  • One school threatened with legal action because it was so filthy;
  • Cobwebs, dirt and out of date food were found regularly;
  • Four schools in one area at serious risk of contamination or mass food poisoning;
  • Mouse droppings.

    The story made a front page splash and spread under the headline: “Do you know what your child is really eating?”
