Firms join forces to encourage young reporters

Companies in Stoke-on-Trent have joined forces to encourage youngsters to become involved in the world of journalism.

Groundwork Stoke-on-Trent, The Hanley Economic Building Society and The Britannia Building Society teamed up with The Sentinel to take on groups of schoolchildren for half a day of work experience.

After finding out as much information as possible about their firm, the children then had to write a newspaper style report to summarise their findings.

It is hoped that the scheme will educate the youngsters about Stoke’s local businesses, and inspire them to pursue careers in the media by allowing them first-hand knowledge and experience in both areas.

Editor of The Sentinel, Sean Dooley, was full of praise for those that took part in the programme.

He said: “Reporters of the Future is an excellent initiative.

“It is not only an insight into the work of a journalist and a cross section of business, but also builds a bridge between industry and education. I’m sure all involved will have found this a very rewarding exercise.”
