Firms asked to give to Standard bus appeal

Ex-servicemen in a Gloucestershire town are to be on the receiving end of new transport thanks to an appeal by the Cotswold Standard.

Almost £3,000 has already been raised for the Buy A Bus Appeal, to help ex-servicemen and women around Stowe-on-the-Wolds.

The latest drive is taking the form of a letter-writing campaign to local firms asking them to contribute to the fund’s £13,000 target.

The Royal British Legion branch is writing to every shop and business asking them to donate directly to the appeal, or provide something to offer in a forthcoming auction of promises.

One of the town’s hotels has already upped the stakes by asking for bids for a four-night midweek stay in the honeymoon suite.

The Legion’s Mobility Unit needs a minibus to help up to 40 members get to hospital or doctors’ appointments.

There is no Government funding to cover this transport through the ambulance service, which means that for the last two years mobility officers have been using their own cars.

The Cotswold Standard appeal is aiming to buy a Suzuki Wagon R+, complete with a wheelchair ramp.
