Examiner celebrations continue

Celebrations to mark the Examiner’s 150th anniversary have been continuing with a special dinner at Huddersfield Town Hall.

The event was attended by 180 guests, including Kirklees Mayor Clr Mohan Sokhal, Last Of The Summer Wine actress Dora Bryan, and Philip Graf, chief executive of Trinity Mirror, the Examiner’s parent group.

During the evening many of the guests paid tribute to the paper, and editor John Williams said the newspaper reflected the character of the town with pride and confidence.

He said: “When I came to Huddersfield in 1994 I was struck by how much readers claimed the Examiner as their newspaper.

“I think it is a tribute to our predecessors that they managed to develop and nurture a quality about the Examiner that endeared it to the population. That affection is still very strong.”

Mr Christopher Dicks, former proprietor, outlined some of the newspaper’s history, from its launch in 1851 by Joseph Woodhead, to its purchase eight years ago by Trinity Mirror.

He said: The Examiner is no longer locally owned, but what Joseph Woodhead created with his three sons lives on.”

  • Dozens of readers also helped celebrate the Examiner’s anniversary by sampling a special birthday cake, which was given out in the town centre by editor John Williams.
