Evening Times editor joins press watchdog

Glasgow Evening Times editor Charles McGhee has been appointed to the Press Complaints Commission as one of seven editorial members.

He replaces David Pollington, editor of the Sunday Post, who has retired from the Commission after two years.

Charles has been editor of the Glasgow Evening Times since 1999. Previously he had worked on a number of other newspapers, including the Sunday Herald, Daily Record and Sunday Times Scotland. The Evening Times was named Evening Newspaper of the Year in The Drum 2003 Awards.

He said: “It is now widely acknowledged that the PCC has performed a central role in raising standards in journalism and protecting members of the public from intrusion and inaccuracy. I look forward to serving on the Commission and helping to maintain this excellent record.”

Commission chairman Sir Christopher Meyer said: “He has a wealth of experience in the newspaper industry, and will bring a valuable Scottish perspective to the Commission’s work. At the same time, I would like to pay tribute to David Pollington’s sterling service to the Commission. He has been a tremendous colleague and will be much missed.”
