Evening Telegraph runs 'live' GCSE results day

The Northants Evening Telegraph turned the disadvantage of an early one-edition print deadline into a chance to run a live online news operation to cover the GCSE results.

As reporters and photographers came into the newsroom with copy and pictures they were immediately uploaded onto a special area of the website.

By mid-afternoon more than 20 schools had their results published online, most of them with photographs.

Assistant editor Nick Tite was assigned to the task, working in tandem with librarian Liz McBride who has increasingly become involved in uploading content.

Editor Jeremy Clifford said: “The day was a great success. During the summer we have only been printing one edition of the newspaper to get it into people’s hands earlier.

“That meant we were unable to update the newspaper during the day with tales of success from the schools in our area.

“Instead we decided to run a live breaking news operation solely online. We pre-promoted the fact we were doing this in the newspaper and briefed the team on what was required.”

Nick Tite said: “There was a real buzz in the office for the whole of the day. We effectively had a rolling deadline and people understood the need to get the copy onto the site as soon as possible.”

The Evening Telegraph still published eight pages with more pictures and reaction from all of the schools on Friday.

Jeremy said: “This gave a real flavour of how our newsrooms will be in the not too distant future and gave back to the newspaper the feeling that we were breaking news and publishing it as it happened.”
