Evening paper wins apology over FOI censoring

An evening newspaper has won an apology from health chiefs after information was withheld that should have been made public.

The Evening Times in Glasgow had made a request for information from NHS Greater Glasgow under the Freedom of Information Act, and demanded a review when minutes of the health board’s corporate management team were censored.

The board claimed a passage cut out of the minutes related to “confidential staff employment and salary issues”.

But a non-executive director has now ruled the information should have been disclosed and the paper has received a written apology.

The Evening Times has since reported that the censored minute revealed the board’s medical director had tabled papers to the management team on how new consultants’ pay deals would affect city hospitals.

It is not clear why health chiefs felt the information should be kept secret.
