Evening Express sorts out bungled bill

Shocked great-grandad Gordon Kennedy panicked when he was hit with a gas bill for nearly £2,000.

But thanks to his local evening paper – the Aberdeen Evening Express – the bungled bill has turned into a £120 windfall.

Mr Kennedy (81) could not believe his eyes when the bill for £1,966 from Scottish Gas arrived last month. He usually pays about £40 a month through a regular payment scheme.

After he rang the gas company to query the bill, he received a letter saying he had to pay a first instalment of £516 by the end of this month. At this stage, the worried pensioner turned to the Evening Express for help.

The newspaper’s inquiries showed that Scottish Gas actually owed Mr Kennedy £120.

A spokeswoman for the company said they were very sorry for any worry caused to Mr Kennedy and praised the Evening Express for highlighting the matter.

Mr Kennedy said: “It is a huge relief that it has all been sorted out.”
